![]() ![]() I was trying to take mouthfuls, and even after years of drinking that can be a bit much. When I started out, I didn't know how little whiskey needs to pass through your lips for it to be a flavorful sip. Oh, another point, just in case someone needs to hear it. After I started using mouthwash 2x a day, I found I could drink a glass of whiskey straight up and not have to fight the heat to enjoy it. I liked the flavor, but I'd have to shoot it because the heat would hit and I'd get involuntary convulsions, lol. That's actually how I started drinking whiskey regularly. Not the stuff that's advertised as being less-burning, either, the green stuff (store brands work fine for this). This is slightly tangential to the conversation, but if you ever want to train your tongue and palate to not mind whisk(e)y burn, then start swishing twice a day with mouthwash. Haven't had Maker's Mark in a while, but I remember it being pretty non-bitey (as far as a bourbon can be, of course). My daily drinker is Bulleit, and I think it has fairly little heat. Joke answer: Wild Turkey 101, because your mouth goes numb from the high proof. I'm guessing you're defining smoothness as lack of bite? I think some folks in this thread are conflating smoothness with lack of flavor. I'll join the chorus and say that's not really a feature I look for in a bourbon.
